…and then you move on to the next unit, right?

But it’s time for a major mindset shift when it comes to assessments. Let’s get started!
Why Post-Assessment Reflection Matters
But here’s the problem with the “give the test -> grade the test -> return the test” cycle.
Students typically fall into one of two buckets
- Glance at the grade, crumple it up, and shove it deep down in their back packs
- Or celebrate and never revisit mistakes
Neither leads to growth.
Students in bucket 1, continue to solidify themselves as “non-math people.”
Students in bucket 2 will not know what to do if their success ever wavers.
Neither bucket leads to growth.
The Mindset Shift Students Need
Your job is to take the students who have all ready labeled themselves “bad at math” and interrupt that narrative.
When you pass back a test with a low grade, the message kids need from you is: “This is normal and I have a plan.”
The worst thing we can do is pass back a test and move on like nothing happened.
As poet and teacher Taylor Mali says- “I can make a C+ feel like a Congressional Medal of Honor, and an A- feel like a slap in the face.”
The way kids interpret their test scores in entirely up to you!
My 4 Step Post-Assessment Reflection Cycle
Unpopular Opinion: The post-assessment reflection cycle needs an entire day.
Yes, I know you’re crunched for time and you have a million things to teach. But you will be reteaching ALL OF THEM, if you don’t take the time to do this after each assessment.
Step 1: Students Grade Their Own Assessment
Yes, you read that right. Students grade their own tests.
Before you panic… hear me out 😄
This is one of the most powerful learning moments you can create.
How it works:
- Provide an answer key
- Students mark correct (✓) and incorrect (X)
- They circle correct answers
Pro tips:
- Use a unique pen color kids aren’t likely to have on their own
- Make it a “pencil-free” classroom (no sneaky answer-changing!)
- Print paper copies of the test, even if students took it digitally
Why this works:
- Immediate feedback
- Students see their own thinking
- Mistakes are still fresh
Step 2: Partner Debrief (Where the Magic Happens)
This is where things really click.
How to structure it:
Students work in strategic pairs (not just friends).
Each question falls into one of three categories:
- ✔️ Both partners got it correct → skip it
- ❌ Both partners got it wrong → star it for whole group debrief
- 🤝 One right, one wrong → focus here
Category three is the sweet spot.
The student who got it right explains their thinking.
The other student identifies their mistake, asks questions, and copies the correct work down.
Why this works:
- Students learn by explaining
- Peer language is often clearer than teacher language
- It builds confidence and capacity on both sides
Step 3: Whole-Group Reflection
Now we bring the whole class together and focus on questions that fell into category 2 (the ones both partners got wrong).
A whole class debrief only works if students do most of the talking.
Try:
- Asking for next steps instead of giving them
- Letting students explain solutions
- Making mistakes on purpose for students to fix
If lecturing worked our jobs would be so easy!
Step 4: Corrections and Written Reflection
Now it’s time to solidify the learning.
For every missed problem, students should complete the following steps on a separate sheet of paper.
- Solve it correctly
- Show all work
- Explain their mistake in writing
You could also have students complete a written reflection with questions like:
- What felt easy? What was challenging?
- How did you prepare?
- What will you do differently next time?
Optional (but powerful):
- Have a parent/guardian sign the written reflection
- Offer extra credit for completed corrections
Tips for Making This System Work
Here’s what makes or breaks this post-assessment reflection process:

Mix ability levels and personalities for the best results.
✔️ Give it enough time
Rushing defeats the purpose. Plan for it. It needs a full block!
✔️ Use your data
Target the most-missed questions for whole-group discussion.
✔️ Normalize mistakes
Make it clear: mistakes are part of learning, not failure.
✔️ Don’t skip this step
This is not “extra.” This is instruction.
