A focused, structured 40-minute reteach lesson that gets straight to the root of the misunderstanding and shows immediate growth.

Why Spiral Review Isn’t Always Enough
Spiral review is helpful, but it has limits.
When students never fully understood a skill in the first place, more repetition doesn’t solve the issue. It just gives them more chances to practice it wrong.
Instead, we need a structure that:
👉 identifies the misunderstanding
👉 addresses it immediately
👉 gives students enough “at bats” to actually master it this time
That’s where this reteach lesson model comes in.
The 40-Minute Reteach Lesson Structure
This routine is simple, predictable, and powerful:
🕒 Total Time: 40 Minutes
- Part 1: Quiz A (10 min)
- Part 2: Partner Debrief (10 min)
- Part 3: Whole-Group Debrief (10 min)
- Part 4: Quiz B (10 min)
Part 1: Quiz – Version A (Diagnosis)
Students begin with a short diagnostic quiz.
Purpose:
👉 Reveal misconceptions quickly
Make sure students understand this is not about a grade. It’s about figuring out where the breakdown is.
You’re looking for:
- Which errors are most common
- Where students get stuck
- Who needs the most targeted support
This becomes your roadmap for instruction.
Part 2: Answer Checking & Partner Debrief
Now students begin making sense of their results.
First, pass out answer keys and have students grade their own quizzes.
Next, students unpack the results in partners.
- Partners compare answers
- They star questions they both missed (save these for the whole group)
Then the focus shifts:
👉 If one student got a question right and the other didn’t, the student who got it correct explains their thinking.
This is where the real learning happens. As the partner breaks down the problem, the other student can ask questions and compare work to find their own mistake.
If time allows, partners return to the starred questions they both missed.
Part 3: Whole-Group Debrief
Now it’s time to bring the class together.
Here, we focus on the questions that were starred in Part 2 (questions missed by both partners).
If you’re using digital quizzes, this step becomes even easier. You can quickly identify the most-missed questions in Google Forms.
And here’s the key:
👉 The teacher should talk less than the students.
Your job is to guide and ask meaningful questions. Their job is to think, take notes, and participate.
Remember, if lecturing worked, we would never need reteach lessons!
Part 4: Quiz – Version B (Growth Check)
Finally, students complete a second quiz on the same skill.
This is where you see:
- Immediate growth
- Clarified understanding
- Reduced misconceptions
It’s the same concept, but with fresh questions.
That separation matters. It ensures students are applying what they just learned, not memorizing answers.

FAQs
Do I really need to fit all four parts of the reteach lesson into one class period?
Ideally, yes! The magic of this structure is seeing growth from Quiz A to Quiz B in the same lesson. But if your periods are shorter than 40 minutes, you can split it across two days. Just keep Parts 1 and 2 together on day one, then do Parts 3 and 4 the next day.
Should Quiz A and Quiz B count as grades?
I recommend keeping Quiz A grade-free since it’s purely diagnostic. Students need to feel safe showing you what they don’t know. Quiz B is up to you. Some teachers enter it as a replacement grade, which is a great motivator!
What if students cheat when they grade their own quizzes?
Since Quiz A isn’t for a grade, there’s really nothing to gain by cheating. When students know the quiz is about finding their mistakes instead of earning points, the pressure disappears.
How do I pair students for the partner debrief?
Mixed-ability pairs work best. You want most pairs to have at least one student who got each question right so the explaining can happen. Avoid pairing two students who are both struggling with the skill. I wrote an entire blog post about How I Structure Partner Practice if you’d like to read more!
What if the whole class bombs Quiz A?
That’s valuable information! If almost everyone misses the same questions, skip ahead to the whole-group debrief and spend more time there. This tells you the skill needs a full reteach, not just a repair.
Is this only for math?
I use it for math, but the reteach lesson structure works for any skill with clear right and wrong answers. Grammar, science vocabulary, map skills… if you can quiz it, you can reteach it this way.
